Hey! International students

How have you been?

I hope you are doing great.

So, what is OPT?

I know a lot of you, must be thinking it is pain in my a**. But it is also the thing that every International student has to face. OPT stands for Optional Practical Training. It is a period of time given by the US government to allow international students to work under American companies in their respective fields. For Non-STEM fields the OPT period is 1 year and for STEM it is also for 1 year, but they can apply for a 24-month extension. STEM fields are Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Students belonging to these fields are allowed to work in the USA for 3 years. The procedure for applying is very easy. You need to be very cautious while filing to OPT visa status. You need to file form I-20 at USCIS. You need to file 3 months prior to graduation. As the process for OPT takes around 90–150 days. Once your process gets over you will have an OPT EAD card.

Why is it so much important?

OPT is as important as education in a foreign country for International students. As for completing their degree, they must have invested a lot of money. And as a student, they don’t have enough work time to earn all that money back. Most of the International students that come to the USA come from a country where their currency is lower than American dollars. So all the savings they do while returning their home makes them rich in their country. Or simply people also want their return on their time invested. It totally depends on person to person. What their reason is to stay? That will determine why is it important to them.

How do companies hire?

In order to get what we want we need to give what others want. It is a simple rule of nature. You will get what you want only after what was needed. Companies basically look after following things

  1. Confidence
  2. Body Language
  3. Negotiation Skills
  4. Will Power
  5. Loyalty
  6. Interpersonal Skills
  7. Experience
  8. Skills
  9. Nature
  10. Dedication

Well, If you can impress them with any 7 of the above then you don’t need to worry about landing a job ever again. Well now comes how will I show all of the above skills and just brief moments of time we have. Well, you can start with a great resume. A resume puts your impression in their mind. Which will make them believe that you are a confident and well-sorted person. Then when you get a call for an interview, mostly HR will be calling you. You need to ask confidently about their company. And also ask them how are you. Not just for sake of asking but genuinely ask them. It is a normal and humanly thing to do. So there are many things that you can do pre-interview to create an amazing impression.

How can you use this to find an OPT Job?

Well, one point I forgot to mention is that you must have a good network as it will help you in the information-gathering phase. Information-gathering is a phase in which you gather information from all different sources in your network. You gather information like:-

  1. Which company is hiring OPT candidates?
  2. What pay does the company offer to freshers?
  3. How many vacancies they have?
  4. What are the office hours?
  5. How many leave do they give paid?

Information can come from your friends, faculties, University placement department, a staffing company, or even from the uncle you met at Mcdonald’s. So the endpoint is to try to gather as much information as you can. Once you have knowledge of which company you need to apply to, then start applying. Keep having different resumes according to the company’s ideals and morals. You will thank me later for this tip. Then once you have applied everywhere then wait for the call from the HR department.

Now create the best impression on the phone with HR. It is very simple, All she can judge you on the phone is from your voice and vocabulary. Now, how to nail that phone call. Just practice voice modulation. Try using more pause. Don’t be like ahh, umm, etc this thing will eat up all the impression you have made. Be confident and you will be good to go. So when you will reach for the interview. Your impression has been already made. And they will definitely be thinking very highly of you.

Now comes the Interview, in which most of the candidates be scared as hell. You just need to maintain your calm and you will nail that interview. Most people ask me how to not to be scared during an interview. Well, it’s very simple. Ask yourself why are you afraid? Why? Have you done something wrong? When you ask these questions you will realize that your fear is based on illusion. And within a few moments of asking these questions, you will find yourself completely fearless. It is my trick, Don’t share this trick with anyone else. And Once you are done with the interview, you will know that you passed the interview like a child’s play.

But if you don’t want to get in all this mess you can just simply visit United OPT. They will get you 7 confirmed interviews. Cracking the interview will always be done by us. So I guess I helped you.

Thank you so much

See you next time

And

Yes

Be confident.
